Grilled Cheese – The Fort Pub and Grill

What:      Grilled Cheese
Where:    The Fort Pub and Grill   (9273 Glover Road, Fort Langley, BC)  http://www.thefortpub.wix.com
Why:       My friend Kat took me to Fort Langley for my birthday to experience the tasty goodness of “Say Cheese”. Unfortunately we got there too late and it was closed. Instead we went to The Fort Pub and even though it wasn’t on the menu (and neither was any bourbon for my birthday drink!) they were very accommodating and made me a scrumpdillyicious grilled cheese with real cheddar and loads of crispy bacon, just the way I love it. Such a treat I couldn’t have asked for anything more!!

Classic Grilled Cheese – Black Frog

What:      Classic Grilled Cheese on multigrain
Where:    Black Frog   (108 Cambie Street, Vancouver BC)  http://www.theblackfrog.ca
Why:       When I’m hungry, ultimately what I crave is a grilled cheese. It’s been that way since I was wee. When I make them at home I use a combination of thick Kraft slices and aged cheddar on sourdough, rye or multigrain bread. I use real butter and grill until both sides are browned to a crisp and the cheese is getting gooey. I prefer it with a creamy bowl of mushroom soup but fries or salad works. The sandwich pictured above is just how I like them. Bread browned with a crunch, crispy bacon and loads of it covered fully with melted cheese. Eating this was heavenly and if I didn’t have the fries I would have wanted to order another one.

Guinness Battered Fish ‘n Chips – The Blarney Stone

What:      Guinness Battered Fish ‘n Chips
Where:    The Blarney Stone   (216 Carrall Street, Vancouver BC)  http://www.blarneystone.ca
Why:       Other than seaside restaurants, for me pubs are the places to find the best fish and chips. I love the batter crisp without being too greasy and the fish light, flaky and moist.  The Blarney Stone serves up perfect pieces of cod with house fries that still have the skin on them (yum!!), and creamy coleslaw. Always a treat to sit up at the bar and tuck in with a Kilkenny at the ready.

The Chop – Railtown Cafe

What:      The Chop
Where:    Railtown Cafe  (397 Railway Street, Vancouver BC)  http://www.railtowncafe.ca
Why:       I’ve become a fan of the Railtown Cafe for a number of reasons but mostly because of the options you have when ordering. You can pretty much create your own salad from scratch or alter the existing items on the menu. The Chop is more like a cobb salad to me with one exception… beets! Normally not happy with these little rooters, more so because what ever I’m wearing will advertise beets for free, but in this dish they are incredibly yummy! And because they are such a healthy choice it makes me think I’m choosing a good thing. All the regulars are here in big chunky fashion … chicken, avocado, tomatoes and bacon. Old chedder is a nice touch, the sharp tangy taste makes the savoriness of the bacon addictive, however I’ve been experimenting with the cheese and I’ll ask for chunks of cheddar (instead of slices) with blue and that adds a bit of creaminess to it all, with some nuts and dried cranberries for an added zing. Railtown adds a quaint little pitcher of dressing, which I can give or take. I find the more I eat these types of salads the flavour of all the other ingredients tend to create a party of their own in the bowl making lettuce and dressing unnecessary accessories which I’ve been requesting to have less of.

This Blog

Are you wondering if I’ve tried all these foods in one week?

If you’re reading this, thank you! Thanks for clicking on and checking it out. I’ve had the concept of this blog, or this ‘type’ of blog in my head for over a year and now that I’m finally making it a reality I’m loading up all the mini-reviews and photos I’ve been stockpiling. I’m not certain how to change the date on each post so they are dating as at the date they are published.

I’ve never created a blog before and your feedback is welcome in helping me get it right. For the moment I’m not including ‘comments’ in the layout because I find that they can be distracting and take on a whole life of their own, which is fine in another forum, but this is not a forum as much as it is a food diary of my favourite things.

I will generally post about things I’ll go back to time and again or I find exceptional the first time. Eventually I aim to create a well rounded ‘go-to guide of what we all crave the most’.  That said, it might take some time to grow the way I want it to. In the meantime, feedback and suggestions are appreciate, bon appetite!
