Fast Food Sushi – Craft Beer Market

best new deliciousness!!

mini bacon cheeseburger sushi

What:      Fast Food Sushi
Where:    Craft Beer Market  (85 West 1st Avenue, Vancouver BC)  vancouver.craftbeermarket.ca
Why:        Imagine a cheeseburger and fries wrapped in bacon and served up sushi style. OMG! So delicious I find myself craving them whenever I drink beer! 6 pieces on a plate garnished with swirls of ketchup and slivers of dill pickles are an ideal appie when you’re belly up to the bar with your buddy and wondering whether or not you should order food. Mind you they are HOT, as in not cold, so when they are first served resist the urge to immediately pop one in your mouth. Instead, oooh and aaah at how cute and yummy they look. Marvel at how the thin slices of pickles are piled like ginger at the corner of the plate while they cool down a smidge. Then prep your chopsticks and dig in. If you love bacon, you’ll love these. Trust me.

Cobb Salad – Deacon’s Corner

reviving a classic

reviving a classic

What:      Cobb Salad
Where:    Deacon’s Corner   (101 Main Street, Vancouver BC)  http://www.deaconscorner.ca
Why:       A while back a friend posted a photo of a dish he ordered called ‘the macho bowl’, which essentially was a cobb salad without the lettuce. I’ve yet to find such a thing outside of my kitchen but Deacon’s comes pretty close. There are generous portions of all the favourites … avocado, bacon, blue cheese, tomatoes, corn and chicken, piled onto lettuce in a big bowl and topped off with a hard boiled egg. This dish is a meal in itself and with just salt and pepper added it seems so much healthier than a salad slathered with dressing.

Porchetta Sandwich – Meat and Bread

delicious savory crunchy crackling

What:      Porchetta Sandwich with Salsa Verde
Where:    Meat and Bread   (370 Cambie Street, Vancouver BC)  http://www.meatandbread.ca
Why:       Hands down the best porchetta sandwich, ever! For me the best part is the crackling. If I could have a sandwich with just the crackling, I would be such a happy camper.  Every bite is a delicious combination of crunchy crackle and juicy succulent pork with their own mix of salsa verde, yum!  Best paired up with a beer or a cold cherry cola, and make sure you grab a few napkins… things might get messy.

Flat White – Nelson the Seagull

rich & creamy, made with love

rich & creamy, made with love

What:      Flat White Coffee
Where:    Nelson the Seagull   (315 Carrall St, Vancouver BC)  http://www.nelsontheseagull.com
Why:        When I lived in Australia I became addicted to flat whites, an Aussie version of a latte. It’s difficult to find someone in Vancouver that serves them, much less lists them on the menu, so you can imagine my surprise and delight at finding Nelson the Seagull makes them… perfectly!

What is a flat white?

Similar to a latte, it’s prepared by freepouring the velvety microfoam from the bottom of a pitcher of steamed milk into a couple of shots of hot strong espresso. Ideally creating the rich caramelly brown layer on top that baristas get all artsy with. Priced at $3.50, I would happily pay this over anything coming from any of the chains.
